Intent

At Thorpe Lea Primary School, we believe that Geography helps to encourage and produce answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. The geography curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and skills that can then be applied to other subjects providing cross curricular links that embed knowledge. Geography is, by nature, an investigative and inquisitive subject, with opportunities to instill in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We intend to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people and natural and human environments. Through our teaching, we intend to produce thoughts and questions to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions by exploring and finding research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it. 

Implementation

• Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve a depth of knowledge throughout their learning. We have identified the key knowledge and skills of each  topic and careful consideration has been given to ensure progression and consistency across topics through each year group across the school.
• At Thorpe Lea Primary School we provide a variety of opportunities for geography learning inside and outside the classroom. 
• At Thorpe Lea, we believe that the promotion of Geographical language  is essential to successfully gaining a deeper understanding of geographical concepts including simple compass directions (North, South, East and West) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far; left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map.
• We use world maps, atlases and globes to investigate and identify the United Kingdom and its counties, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at this key stage.

Impact

Our pupils at Thorpe Lea will be curious and engaged learners regarding the world and its people.

Pupils will be able to learn and apply a range of investigative skills that assist their natural curiosity.

Pupils will develop an eagerness and fascination about the world, its people and its human and physical features that will strengthen their life long curiosity which will remain with them for the future.
